거울과 립스틱

 

 

 

어느 작은 중학교 교장에게는 고민이 하나 있었는데
립스틱을 바르기 시작한 일부 상급학년 여학생들 때문이었다.
화장실에서 립스틱을 바른 후, 화장실 거울에 입술을 꾸욱 눌러 입술자국을 남겨 놓는 것이었다.

더 심해지기 전에 이를 막을 방법을 생각해 낸 교장,
립스틱을 바른 여학생 모두를 불러 모아 놓고는 오후 3시에 여학생 화장실로 자신을 만나러 오라고 했다.
시간이 되어 여학생들이 집합 장소로 가보니
교장과 학교 건물관리인이 자신들을 기다리고 있었다.

매일밤 거울을 닦는일이 관리인에게 하나의 골칫거리가 되고 있음을 설명한 교장은
문제가 정말 어느정도인지 여학생들이 충분히 이해하지 못하고 있는 것 같다며,
립스틱 자국을 지우는게 얼마나 힘들었는지를 직접 목격시키기로 했다..

시범을 보이기 시작한 관리인,
그는 통에서 긴 손잡이가 달린 브러쉬를 꺼내서는
바로 가까이 있는 변기속에 그 브러쉬를 푹 담갔다.
그리곤 거울쪽으로 걸어가서는 립스틱 자국을 박박 지우기 시작했다.
.......
...

관리인은 이후로 화장실 거울을 닦을 일이 더 이상 없어졌다.

 
A principal of a small middle school had a problem with a few of the older girls
starting to use lipstick. When applying it in the bathroom, they would press their lips
to the mirror and leave lip prints. Before it got out of hand he thought of a way to stop it.

He gathered together all the girls who wore lipstick and told them to meet him
at the ladies room at 3:00 pm. They gathered that afternoon at the appointed time
and found the principal and school custodian waiting for them.

The principal explained that it was becoming a problem for the custodian to clean the mirror
every night. He said he felt the ladies did not fully understand just how much of a problem
it was and he wanted them to witness how hard it was to clean it.

The custodian then demonstrated. He took a long-handled brush out of a box, dipped the
brush in the nearest toilet, walked over to the mirror and proceeded to remove the lipstick.

It was the last time he had to do so.
