매우 부유한 가정의 한 사내아이가 있었습니다.
아이의 아버지가 하루는 사람들이 얼마나 가난하게 사는지 보여줄 목적으로
아들을 데리고 여행을 떠났습니다.
아버지가 생각하기에 몹시 가난하다 싶은 어느 농가에 도착했지요.
그곳에서 두 부자는 며칠을 보냈습니다.
돌아오는 길에 아버지는 아들에게 이번 여행이 좋았는지를 물었습니다.
"와, 정말 좋았어요 아빠" 아들이 대답했습니다.
"너 눈치챘니, 사람들이 얼마나 가난하게 사는지를?"
"예, 아빠."
아버지는 아들에게 이번 여행에서 자신이 느낀 감상을 좀 더 자세히 말해보라 했습니다.
"음... 우린 개가 한 마리 밖에 없는데 그 사람들은 네 마리씩이나 있었어요.
울 집 정원엔 수영장이 있지만, 그들에겐 끝없이 넓은 강이 있었구,
우린 값비싼 랜턴들을 가지고 있지만, 그들 머리 위엔 밤하늘 수많은 별이 있었지요.
안마당이 울 집엔 있지만, 그들에겐 지평선 전체가 그들 것이더라구요,
고작 자그마한 땅을 가지고 있는 우리에 비해, 그들은 끝도 없는 들판을 가지고 있었어요.
우리가 음식을 사서 먹는 반면에, 그들은 직접 키워서 먹던 걸요.
울집은 재산을 보호하기 위한 높은 담장을 설치했지만,
그들에겐 그게 필요 없더라고요, 그들 친구가 그들을 지켜주니까요."
아버지는 놀라서 한마디도 할 수가 없었습니다.
그런 다음 아들은 덧붙였습니다,
"아빠 고마워요, 우리가 얼마나 가난한지를 알게 해주셔서."

There was a boy, whose family was very wealthy.
One day his father took him on a trip to the country,
where he aimed to show his son, how poor people live.
So they arrived to a farm of a very poor family, as he considered.
They spend there several days.
On their return, the father asked his son, did he like the trip.
"Oh, it was great, dad" – the boy replied.
"Did you notice, how poor people live?"
"Yeah, I did" – said the boy.
The father asked his son to tell in more details about his impressions from their trip.
"Well, we have only one dog, and they have four of them.
In our garden there is a pool, while they have a river, that has no end.
We‘ve got expensive lanterns, but they have stars above their heads at night.
We have the patio, and they have the whole horizon.
We have only a small piece of land, while they have the endless fields.
We buy food, but they grow it.
We have high fence for protection of our property,
and they don't need it, as their friends protect them."
The father was stunned, he could not say a word.
Then the boy added:
"Thank you, dad, for letting me see how poor we are."
