카우보이와 천국

 

 

 

 

한 늙은 카우보이가 그의 믿음직한 말을 타고
뒤를 뒤따르는 충성스런 그의 개와 함께 낯선 길을 가고 있었습니다.

새로운 경치에 한참을 빠져들던 그는 문득,
지금 자신의 곁에 있는 개는 자신의 말과 마찬가지로 이미 죽은 지

수년이 지났다는 사실을 깨닫게 되었습니다.
 

혼란스러워진 그는 대체 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는 건지,
그리고 이 길은 어디로 이어진 것인지 궁금해졌습니다.

잠시 후, 대리석처럼 보이는 하얀 돌담에 이르렀습니다. 
긴 언덕 위에는 높은 반원형 아치가 있었고
아치 꼭대기엔 햇빛에 빛나는 금으로 된 'H'자가 얹혀져 있었습니다.

아치 안으로 마치 조가비 속 진줏빛 광채를 머금은 듯한 호화로운 게이트가 보이고,
그 게이트로 이어진 길은 금으로 만들어진 듯했습니다.
 

게이트를 향해 말을 몰았습니다.
가까이 다가가자 책상에 앉아 있는 남자가 한쪽에 보입니다.
긴 여정에 몹시 목이 마르고 지쳐버린 그는 외쳤습니다,

"실례합니다만, 여기가 어딘가요?"
"여긴 천국입니다 선생님." 그 남자가 대답했습니다.

"와! 혹시 마실 물 좀 있으신지..."
"물론입지요 선생님. 어서 들어오세요, 시원한 물을 단숨에 가져다 드리겠습니다."

"제 동반자들도 데려올 수 있나요?" 문이 열리자 카우보이는 그에게 물었습니다.
"죄송합니다만, 애완동물들은 받을 수 없습니다."

카우보이는 잠시 생각에 잠겼습니다.  그러더니 길 쪽으로 다시 방향을 돌려
졸졸 따라오는 그의 개와 함께 말을 몰아 길을 다시 나섰습니다.

 

 

 

한참을 가다 그는 또 다른 언덕 위에서 흙길을 만났습니다.
그 흙길은 마치 한 번도 닫혀 본 적이 없을듯한 어느 목장 게이트로 연결되었습니다.
게이트에 다다르자 나무에 기대 책을 읽고 있는 한 남자가 안에 보입니다.

"실례합니다만, 물 좀 얻어 마실 수 있을까요?"
"물론이지요, 바로 저쪽에 펌프가 있으니 마음껏 드십시오."

"여기 이 친구들도요?" 카우보이는 그의 개와 말을 가리켰습니다.
"되고 말고요! 녀석들 역시 무척이나 목이 말라 보이네요." 

그들 셋이 문을 통과하자 아니나 다를까, 구식의 수동펌프가 있었고
그 옆에서는 양동이들이 놓여 있었습니다.
카우보이는 컵과 양동이에 아주 아주 시원한 물을 가득 담았습니다.
그도 주욱 들이키고, 그의 말과 개도 벌컥벌컥 마셨습니다.

물을 실컷 마시고 나자 그는 나무 옆에 여전히 서 있는 그 남자에게로 다시 걸어가
"이곳을 뭐라고 부르지요?" 라 물었습니다.
"여긴 천국이랍니다." 그가 대답했습니다.

"거 참 헷갈리는군요. 길 아래에 있는 남자분께서는 또 그곳이 천국이라 하던데요."
"아, 그 화려한 황금길과 가짜 진주로 된 게이트가 있는 곳 말씀이군요?  그곳은 '지옥'입니다."

"사람들이 여기 이름을 그렇게 제멋대로 도용해도 화 안 나세요?"

 

"천만에요. 실은 오히려 더 기쁜걸요,
자신의 소중한 벗들을 저버린 채 혼자만 살아남으려는 사람들을 그쪽에서 걸러내 주고 있잖아요."

 

 

 

 

An old cowboy was riding his trusty horse followed by his faithful dog along an unfamiliar road.

The man was enjoying the new scenery, when he suddenly remembered dying,

and realized that the dog beside him had been dead for years, as had his horse.

Confused, he wondered what was happening, and where the trail was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall that looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill,

it was broken by a tall arch topped by a golden letter "H" that glowed in the sunlight.

Standing before it, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that

led to the gate looked like gold.

He rode toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.

Parched and tired out by his journey, he called out, 'Excuse me, where are we?'
'This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered.
'Wow! Would you happen to have some water?' the man asked.
'Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up.'
As the gate began to open, the cowboy asked, 'Can I bring my partners, too?'
'I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets.'

The cowboy thought for a moment, then turned back to the road and continued riding,

his dog trotting by his side.

After another long ride, at the top of another hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a ranch gate that

looked as if it had never been closed. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside,

leaning against a tree and reading a book.

'Excuse me,' he called to the man. 'Do you have any water?'
'Sure, there's a pump right over there. Help yourself.'
'How about my friends here?' the traveler gestured to the dog and his horse.
'Of course! They look thirsty, too,' said the man.

The trio went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with buckets beside it.

The traveler filled a cup and the buckets with wonderfully cool water and took a long drink, as did his horse and dog.

When they were full, he walked back to the man who was still standing by the tree.

'What do you call this place?' the traveler asked.
'This is Heaven,' he answered.
'That's confusing,' the traveler said. 'The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.'
'Oh, you mean the place with the glitzy, gold street and fake pearly gates? That's hell.'
'Doesn't it make you angry when they use your name like that?'
'Not at all. Actually, we're happy they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind.'
